Tirzepatide is a drug made for treatment of Type II Diabetes and was recently approved by the FDA as a weekly injection to aid in weight loss. It belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists.

Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. When eating, it works by stimulating these two hormones, increasing insulin secretion and reducing glucagon production, which helps regulate blood sugar levels. This can slow digestion of food resulting in increased feelings of fullness, reduced food intake and an overall outcome of weight loss.

Good candidates for Tirzepatide include adults with a BMI≥30 or a BMI≥27 with a condition such as hypertension, Type II Diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis or dyslipidemia.

How effective is tirzepatide for weight loss?

When combined with diet and exercise, Tirzepatide can be a beneficial medication for weight loss. In its initial study, those treated with Tirzepatide had an average weight loss of 15% to 20% of their initial body weight over the course of 72 weeks compared to a placebo.
